Today: The Royal Asiatic Society Korea Branch is hosting a lecture by Tony Michell, titled “Economic and Social Challenges to a Confucian Society in a Global Economic Crisis.”

Michell will discuss the President Lee Myung-bak administration from a long-term perspective of economic policy in Korea that looks at the social and economic changes that have taken place within the lifetimes of the President and his ministers.

He will examine the background of the candlelight protests of 2008 within the theory of changing generations, and the government’s so-called “747” economic policy and the global crisis that swept it away.

Michell first came to Korea in 1978 and worked for the Economic Planning Board, the key government ministry that planned and implemented Korea’s years of growth.

Admission is free for members and 5,000 won ($ 3.74) for non-members.

The lecture will be held at 7:30 p.m. at the second floor lounge of Somerset Palace, located opposite the Japanese Embassy in central Seoul.
