Sunday: The Royal Asiatic Society Korea Branch is hosting a trip to Nami Island, located in the North Han River in Gangwon Province.

The half-moon shaped island is four kilometers (2.4 miles) in diameter and boasts open grassy areas suitable for picnics and recreation surrounded by chestnut and popular trees.

The name of the island derives from the fact that it is home to the tomb of General Nami (1441-1469), who suppressed Lee Shi-ae s revolt during the reign of King Sejo of the Joseon Dynasty, but was later branded a traitor and executed.

As the island is located only 90 minutes from Seoul, it is popular recreational spot for day-trippers.

Nami Island has served as the backdrop for several movies, television series and commercials, including the popular TV series Winter Sonata.

The tour group will arrive on Nami Island around 10 a.m. The morning will be spent touring the island, followed by lunch at your choice of Korean restaurants, though you are welcome to bring a picnic lunch.

After lunch, you will be free to ride bicycles, learn crafts, tour the galleries or just take a leisurely stroll on one of the many walking paths.

The tour leaves at 8 a.m. on Sunday from the Yongsan Post Office and returns to Seoul around 7 p.m.

The tour costs 49,000 won for members and 58,800 won for non-members. This will cover the bus transportation and boat and entrance fees to the island.
