Oct. 27: The Royal Asiatic Society Korea Branch is holding a lecture next Tuesday under the theme “The Sacred Sites of Korea: Criteria, Listings and Tourism.”

Korea has hundreds of historic sacred sites worth visiting and investigating, but only a few of them are well known to the international community.

This lecture - presented by David A. Mason, a professor of Korean cultural tourism at Kyung Hee University in Seoul - will feature the research of Martin Gray, a leading authority on global sacred sites. Building on Gray’s findings and theories - based on extensive discussions with him - Mason will discuss criteria for determining which of Korea’s sites are most sacred.

Photos of some of the best sites will be shown, and the lecture will wrap up with a discussion of the tourism programs at these holy places and examine the prospects for their future development and promotion.

Mason has published several books and many articles on these topics and has given numerous public lectures on the subject.

The lecture will be held in the Residents’ Lounge on the second floor of Somerset Palace starting at 7:30 p.m.
