Sunday: The Royal Asiatic Society Korea Branch is planning a day trip this weekend to the Beopju Temple in North Chungcheong.

Located on beautiful Mount Songni, Beopju Temple is one of the most famous temples in Korea, and boasts three national treasures and numerous other cultural assets, including the largest free-standing bronze Buddha in Asia.

The temple is also the provincial headquarters of the Jogye sect of Korean Buddhism, and is noted for the natural beauty of its setting. Beopju Temple was built in 553 and was destroyed by the Japanese in 1592, but rebuilt in 1624.

During the trip there will be an opportunity to hike to the top of Munjangdae, the highest peak of Mount Songni.

The tour costs 39,500 won for members and 47,400 won for nonmembers. You will also need to bring 3,500 won for the entrance fee, and either a packed lunch or money for a meal at a restaurant near Mount Songni.

The bus will leave from Yongsan Post Office at 8 a.m. and return to Seoul at around 8:30 p.m.
